In the Hadith, Rasoolullah (Peace be upon him) said, ‘In the body there is a piece of flesh. If it is healthy, the entire body is healthy. If it is corrupt, the entire body is corrupt. Listen, this is the heart.’ The heart being referred to here by the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) is the spiritual heart, the one by which we come to recognize our creator. It is this heart, often referred to as the ruh in the terminology of the Quran that requires protection, nurturing and continuous care. Furthermore, Allah said that the one who has a purified soul is successful, while the one who corrupts it is doomed. Moreover, the Quran has commanded us to leave external (physical) sins and internal ones. Allah said that on judgment day, only the one who arrives in front of him with a healthy and safe heart will benefit. We find ourselves in the midst of severe and intense challenges to our spiritual selves. At times we are attracted to sins, and at other times we struggle to find the motivation to worship our Lord. What causes corruption to the soul? What provokes and tempts it? How can we cleanse and purify it? What are the internal sins connected with the heart? What illuminates the heart and provides it with growth? How can we arrive in front of Allah with a healthy spiritual heart? After studying this course, one will gain the ability to self-reflect on one's spiritual state and identify areas of concern. Gain insight to modes of spiritual therapies as forms of healing and removing impurities of the heart.
